The Cellar Trust Statement on “Biological Sex” Legal Clarification
At The Cellar Trust, our focus is – and always has been – on mental health. We are deeply aware of the impact that legal, social, and political changes can have on people’s mental health, especially those who already face discrimination and exclusion.
The recent legal clarification around the definition of “biological sex” is complex and has prompted strong and differing views. While we recognise that some people welcome this clarification, we are concerned about the distress and harm it may cause, particularly for trans and non-binary individuals.
We know that trans people already experience disproportionately high levels of poor mental health. Nearly half of trans people in the UK have attempted suicide—this is not because of who they are, but because of the stigma, marginalisation, and systemic barriers they face.
At The Cellar Trust, we are clear in our values. We support and respect the rights of trans and non-binary people to live authentically and we stand against all forms of discrimination.
