The Cellar Trust statement on racism
The Cellar Trust exists as an organisation to support people with their mental health, and we are deeply concerned about the toll that recent acts of racism and violence are having on individuals and communities. These events have left many feeling unsafe, marginalised and overwhelmed — and we know this can have a profound impact on mental wellbeing.
We are proud to be part of the wonderfully diverse area of Bradford District and Craven in West Yorkshire. The mix of people, cultures and communities we serve — and the diversity within our own staff team — is our strength, and something we are proud of.
The protests show us that many people across our country feel let down or unheard and that there are strong and opposing political views. Whilst we acknowledge that people may have legitimate concerns, we must make one thing clear: we strongly condemn the acts of violence and racism carried out by a small but vocal minority. Regardless of the issues at hand, expressing dissent through violence, in any form, is unacceptable.
It is crucial, now more than ever, that we create an environment of respect, compassion, and inclusivity. Racism and discrimination have no place at The Cellar Trust, and we will continue to stand firmly against hatred in all its forms. We are also taking actions to make sure our staff are safe and supported.
We are committed to building a community where everyone feels they belong. We will keep working tirelessly to support inclusion, belonging and togetherness, because we are at our best when we stand together.
As MP Jo Cox, murdered in 2016, so wisely said: ‘We have far more in common than that which divides us.’
